ART & LITERARY COMPETITION

2008 Annual Literature, Art, and Music Competition

The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County invites your students to participate in our annual Literature, Art, and Music Competition.

Themes  Students may select one of the following themes: “The Power of Youth during the Holocaust,” “From Bystander to Upstander” or “Remembering the Past to Secure the Future.” Literary entries are welcomed in the form of prose, poetry, and drama. Research papers will not be considered. Art pieces may be entered in the categories of “sculpture/three dimensional art” or “painting/drawing.” All music entries will be considered in one category.

Please encourage your students to visit the Holocaust Center and use our library as they work on their projects.

NAMES ARE NOT TO APPEAR ON THE SUBMISSION ITSELF. PLEASE FILL OUT RELEASE FORM AND USE AS COVER SHEET.

Judging  You are the first judge. Please select the ten best pieces by your students and submit them to us. Each entry must conform to the guidelines and format (enclosed) appropriate to its category. Names should not appear on the submission itself; however, the title should be on each submission and accompanying documentation. Each entry must also be accompanied by a signed release form. Submissions from Middle School and High School will be considered separately.

For the literature competition, there will be two rounds of judging. The first round of judges consists of members of our Educational Advisory Board. Excellent entries pass to the second round, which is comprised of writers, editors, and historians. Entries are evaluated on the basis of historical content, style, general literacy and overall quality.

Art and music entries will be subject to one round of judging by a panel consisting of art or music teachers and historians. Judgment is based on creativity, use of medium, and interpretation of theme.

First and Second Prize Awards of US Bonds are granted by category and school level. Group entries will be considered as one entry and the award will go to the school’s art fund.

Awards Ceremony  The Awards Ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2008. All students who submit an entry will receive a certificate of participation.  Winning artistic entries will be exhibited and photographed for inclusion in the compilation. Winning musical entries will be performed at the Awards Ceremony.

Deadlines  There are no exceptions to these dates, so please mark your calendar!
